Odisha tribals oppose operation Green Hunt

Malkangiri, May 1: It was a rare show of strength when more than 10000 tribal men and women gathered in this district headquarters town today to oppose operation Green Hunt against the Maoists.

The tribals who came under the banner of Malkangiri Zilla Adivasi Sangha took out a rally holding banners and placards opposing the alleged police excesses in the name of action against the Maoists.

Armed with their traditional weapons, the tribal men and women marched through the town and handed over a memorandum to District Collector R. Vineel Krishna.

Apart from opposing operation Green Hunt, the tribals demanded that they should not be deprived their rights over forest, land and water in their respective areas.

They said that the administration should stop harassing the tribal people at gun point while denying them land right and other basic services.

They further demanded for proper implementation of the forest rights law to enable the tribals get rights over the land where they have been living since long.
